Special Awards- In addition to rank advancement and merit badges Scouts have several other awards they can earn. Requirements for these following awards can be found in the BSA Requirement Book.

William T. Hornaday Award

Conservation and the Boy Scouts of America have been partners for a long time. Camping, hiking, and respect for the outdoors are a part of the Scouting heritage. Many of the requirements for advancement from Tenderfoot through Eagle Scout rank call for an increasing awareness and understanding of the natural sciences. This special award is presented for distinguished service in conservation. The award is given in one of five forms.
  1. Unit Certificate to a pack, troop, team, or crew/ship.


  2. Badge to a Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, or Venturer.


  3. Bronze medal to a Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, or Venturer for exceptional service to conservation or environmental quality in a council.


  4. Silver medal to a Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, or Venturer for unusual and distinguished service to conservation or environmental quality on a state or regional basis.


  5. Gold medal to an adult Scouter or Venturing leader for unusual and distinguished service to conservation or environmental quality on a state, BSA region, or national basis. For more information go to http://www.scouting.org/awards/hornaday/index.html
Religious Emblems - Youth members may earn a religious emblem of their faith. These awards are not Scouting awards, but are conferred on youth members by their religious leaders. Spirit of the Eagle Award - Boy Scouts of America has created the Spirit of the Eagle Award as an honorary posthumous special recognition for a registered youth member who has lost his or her life in a tragic accident or through illness.

Guidelines are:
    1. The recipient must be a registered youth member under 21 years of age at the time of his or her death.


    2. The unit committee must submit an application for the award within six months of the youth member's death.


    3. The unit committee must request the approval of the local council.
The Spirit of the Eagle Award application is available through your local council service center.

Lifesaving Awards and Meritorious Action Awards - Available to Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scouts, Venturer, or leaders. Information and applications available at your local Council Service Center or at http://www.usscouts.org/usscouts/advance/boyscout/heroism.html

Life to Eagle -

Upon completing the rank of Life, Scouts will receive a copy of the Minsi Trails Council Life to Eagle Packet. A kit for each Life Scout listed on your unit Advancement Report can be picked up at the Scout Shop. Merit Badges -

Each District has a current Merit Badge Counselor list available through the District Advancement Chairman. All persons serving, as merit badge counselors must be registered as a counselor with the Boy Scouts of America. They must be age 18 or older, and recognized as having the skill and education in the subject for which they are to serve as a merit badge counselor. Along with this they must have the ability to work with Scout age boys. Any registered Scout may earn any merit badge at any time. Scouts need not have had rank advancement to be eligible.
